A browser wallet can make it easier to explore decentralized apps, manage supported crypto assets, and connect to web3 services. It also puts more responsibility in your hands. This guide covers the fundamentals before you install or move funds.

First, a quick clarification. This is an independent educational guide, not an official Coinbase support page. Product screens and availability can change. Always verify current instructions and downloads through Coinbase’s official website .

01

What is a Coinbase Wallet browser extension?

Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet: you control access to the wallet, rather than relying on a centralized exchange to hold its private keys for you. A browser extension is a wallet interface that lives in a compatible desktop browser. It can help you view assets on supported networks, approve transactions, and connect to decentralized applications (dapps).

It is useful to distinguish Coinbase Wallet from a Coinbase exchange account. They are related products, but they serve different purposes and may have different login, recovery, and support processes. A wallet connection is not the same as signing in to an exchange. Funds held in a self-custody wallet are controlled by its keys, and transactions generally cannot be reversed by a support team.

Features, supported browsers, networks, and availability can change over time and vary by region. Check official product information before relying on any capability. This guide offers general orientation, not investment, tax, or legal advice.

02

Before you install: a short safety check

Start from a device and browser you trust. Install operating-system and browser updates, use a unique device password, and enable a screen lock. If you share a computer, consider whether a browser wallet is appropriate; other people with access to your unlocked profile may be able to interact with it.

Find the extension through Coinbase’s official wallet website and follow its current download link to the browser’s own extension store. Check the publisher details and spelling carefully. Search advertisements, unsolicited messages, video comments, and look-alike websites can point to imitation software. Never install a wallet file sent to you directly by a stranger.

Decide whether you are creating a new wallet or restoring one you already control. A recovery phrase is highly sensitive: anyone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet. Do not take screenshots, paste it into a website, save it in email or cloud notes, or enter it for a person claiming to provide support. If you already have a wallet, confirm that you have a safe recovery plan before changing devices.

How to install the extension

1. Open the official starting point. Type Coinbase’s known web address yourself or use a trusted bookmark. From there, follow the wallet download link. Avoid sponsored results if you cannot confirm the destination.

2. Confirm the browser and publisher. Use the extension listing linked by the official site. Check its name, publisher, and browser compatibility before selecting the browser’s install button. The exact wording and layout may differ between browsers.

3. Review requested permissions. Read the browser’s permission prompt. An extension may need access to interact with pages when you choose to connect, but permissions deserve attention. If the request seems broader than expected, stop and re-check the listing through Coinbase’s official website.

4. Open the installed wallet. After installation, use the browser’s extensions menu to locate and, if desired, pin the wallet icon. Launch it from there. Do not follow a pop-up that asks you to disclose your recovery phrase just to “verify” an installation.

Set up a new wallet or restore one

When you open the extension, follow the current in-product setup flow. If you choose to create a wallet, the app will guide you through securing access and backing it up. Take time to understand the recovery instructions before storing anything. Use an offline, private method that you can reliably access, and keep backups protected from theft, damage, and unauthorized viewing. Never share a phrase with a friend, support agent, or website.

If you are restoring an existing wallet, make sure you have selected the authentic extension and understand which recovery method applies. Enter recovery information only into the genuine wallet interface you intentionally opened—not a link sent in chat, an email attachment, a screen-sharing session, or a form. If anything feels unexpected, close the prompt and navigate back through the official site.

Wallet recovery can restore access, but it does not guarantee that assets will appear on every network or that a transaction can be undone. If you are unsure, do not move funds yet. Review the official help resources and consider asking a knowledgeable, independent person to explain the process without ever showing them your phrase.

05

Connect to a dapp and review what you approve

To connect, visit the dapp by entering its verified address or following a trusted source. Choose its connect-wallet control, select the appropriate wallet option, and confirm the connection inside your extension. A connection typically lets a site request information or transactions; it does not mean you should approve every request the site presents.

Before signing, read the wallet prompt closely. Check the site domain, network, requested permissions, recipient, and amount where shown. A signature can authorize an action even when it does not look like a conventional transfer. If the purpose is unclear, reject it and research the request using official documentation. Do not rush because a page displays a countdown or warns that an account will be lost.

For a first transfer, verify the destination address and the network independently. Some transfers cannot be reversed, and sending an asset over an unsupported network may make recovery difficult or impossible. If appropriate, test with a small amount you can afford to lose. Network fees, confirmation times, and available assets vary; check them before confirming.

06

Security habits that matter

Keep your recovery phrase private. Treat it like the master key to your wallet. Coinbase support will not need you to send it in a message or type it into a support form. Anyone requesting it is a serious warning sign.

Verify every link and address. Use bookmarks for services you have checked, inspect domain spelling, and avoid links from unsolicited direct messages. Scammers often imitate familiar brands, support accounts, and giveaway announcements.

Slow down on approvals. Understand the transaction or permission before signing. Review which network you are on and what a site may be able to do. Disconnect from sites you no longer use where the wallet provides that option; remember, disconnecting a site does not undo transactions already confirmed.

Protect the browser and device. Keep software current, use reputable security practices, and avoid installing extensions you do not need. A wallet cannot protect you from every malicious site, compromised device, or mistaken transaction. Consider how much value belongs in a browser-connected wallet and assess your own risk.

Never share your recovery phrase. Not even once.Legitimate support should never ask you to reveal it. Keep it offline and private.
07

Troubleshooting common first-time issues

The extension icon is missing. Open your browser’s extension manager and check whether the extension is installed and enabled. Pinning controls vary by browser. If it is absent, return to the official Coinbase Wallet page and follow its supported installation path again.

A dapp does not see the wallet. Confirm that the extension is unlocked, the browser is supported, and you chose a compatible wallet connection option. Reload the dapp only after confirming its address. Be cautious of pages that ask you to install a second extension or enter a recovery phrase to fix a connection.

Your balance or asset is not visible. Check the selected network and consult official wallet resources for supported assets and networks. Display settings can differ from on-chain activity. Do not trust unsolicited messages offering to “synchronize” or “validate” a wallet for you.

You need help with an account issue. Navigate to support from Coinbase’s official website. Do not use phone numbers or support links sent by strangers, and never grant remote access to someone who contacted you unexpectedly. Official product flows change, so rely on the latest help center guidance.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is the browser extension the same as a Coinbase exchange account?

No. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet, while an exchange account is a separate product. They have different roles and recovery processes. Use official Coinbase resources to confirm which product you are accessing.

Can Coinbase recover my self-custody wallet?

In self-custody, you are responsible for access and recovery. Do not assume a support team can reverse transactions or retrieve a lost recovery phrase. Review official recovery guidance before creating or restoring a wallet.

Is it safe to connect my wallet to any website?

No. Connecting and signing are meaningful actions. Verify the site, read each request, and reject anything you do not understand. Never enter your recovery phrase on a dapp page.

Go at your own pace.

Start by understanding custody and protecting your recovery information. Then verify the installation source, review each connection, and take time to understand every transaction before you approve it. For current product-specific instructions, always use Coinbase’s official website and help center.
